Complex, real-world problems require interdisciplinary solutions

Problems like climate change, inequality and the ethics of artificial intelligence can’t be solved by one subject alone.

Our Interdisciplinary Problems & Methods (BASc) is the first undergraduate degree of its kind in the UK.

It has been designed to address real-world problems and equip students with the knowledge and skills they’ll need to thrive after graduation.

At the core of the BASc, you'll find:

Problems

Learning is structured around problems. Each term, students interrogate a relevant and important problem, like how to tackle inequality or make steps towards a greener future.

Disciplines

Throughout each term, students study knowledge and skills from across the arts, sciences and humanities. These diverse sources of knowledge provide the lenses through which to understand the given problem, and start to identify ways to tackle it.

Methods

Students learn a variety of research methods, both qualitative (e.g. writing, videography) and quantitative (e.g. coding, statistics), that can be used when tackling problems throughout the degree, and beyond.

Bringing it together through coaching

Coaching plays an integral role in interdisciplinary learning. Each week, small groups of students are helped by a faculty member to make connections across the disciplines, and bring their learning together.

How we're different

Our degree is at the cutting edge of UK higher education:

Problem-based learning

We use real-world problems as a framework for learning. The chosen problems each term are relevant (i.e. they're important and happening right now), evolving and complex. They will reflect what students care about, what organisations care about, and what the world needs.

Bringing together the arts, sciences and humanities

The world isn’t split neatly into subjects, and neither is this degree. Students study knowledge and skills from across the disciplines, learning to combine them to tackle problems.

Yearly paid internships

LIS brokers yearly internships for every eligible student. Previous employer organisations have included Innocent Drinks, KPMG, B Corp, MTR Elizabeth Line, Fidelity International, TextureAI and Tech Nation. Internships are paid and take place over the summer.

We interview every applicant

Students apply directly to LIS via our website. We aren't on UCAS. All eligible applicants will be invited to interview at one of our Selection Days, so we can get to know you beyond your grades.

Graduate prospects

Our BASc students haven’t graduated yet, so we can’t say with certainty what they will do after LIS. But what we do know is that they’re developing a set of in-demand skills and aptitudes that today’s employers want – to the extent that some of our students have already been offered jobs from their internships.
